Nitrous oxide is a handy sedative that can help you feel comfortable during your dental appointment. If you don’t know much about it, you most likely have many questions. You might even have a few nerves. So, to help you, our dentist, Dr. Nils Sandstrom, and dental team would like to teach you more about nitrous oxide and answer your questions by providing the answers to commonly asked questions.
What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a sedative that comes in the form of a gas. It is also known as laughing gas or nitrous, and it oftentimes has a slight taste. The gas will be released through a mask, and the mask will be placed over your nose during your treatment. The nitrous oxide will enter your system as you deeply inhale.
How will nitrous oxide make me feel?
Nitrous oxide will make you feel carefree and relaxed. As you inhale the gas, you will feel light headed and tingly. Sometimes you’ll feel so comfortable that you’ll have the desire to fall asleep during your appointment. However, the nitrous oxide itself will not put you to sleep.
How long will the effects last?
The sedative effects will last as long as the mask is on your nose. Once the nitrous stops flowing through the mask and the mask is taken off your face, you will feel completely normal. This means it’s possible to drive yourself home after your appointment.
