If you’ve ever heard the term sedation dentistry, but aren’t quite sure what it entails, you’re not alone. It’s a confusing term if you’re not aware of the fact that quite a few people suffer from severe dental anxiety.

Since dental anxiety is a recognized phobia, dentists have worked to develop techniques to help people get over their fear of visiting the dentist so they can get the oral health care they need in order to stay healthy.

One of those techniques is sedation dentistry, and our team here at Nils F. Sandstrom, DDS in Palos Heights, Illinois is proud to offer this service to our patients.

What is it?

Sedation dentistry is exactly what it sounds like – it’s when a dental procedure is performed on someone who’s under sedation. Now, the level of sedation varies depending on a number of factors – including the depth of the procedure and severity of dental anxiety suffered by the patient – but all levels of sedation provide the same calming effect that help patients get the oral health care they need.

How does it work?

It’s a really simple process. You come to our office, where after a chat with Dr. Nils Sandstrom, the appropriate level of sedation is chosen and administered either orally or through an IV. Then the procedure is performed and you’re relaxed.
